Dispensaries Open on Christmas in Denver

By:

In Denver, holiday revelers can get into the spirit of the season with something green that smells (sort of) like a Christmas tree. If for some reason Denver stoners couldn’t plan ahead, then at least they will have options for buying marijuana on Christmas day. For anyone who might be wondering, there are dispensaries open on Christmas day in Denver, and they’re even planning on having special deals.

The Grass Station, the Denver dispensary that made headlines for it’s Black (read: Green) Friday sale (The Cannabist reported people camped out for $50 ounces), as well as for being open on Thanksgiving, will be open Christmas day from 12 to 7 for anyone around the area of 4125 Elati Street in Denver.

According to Ryan Fox, CEO of the Grass Station, there are a number of deals at the dispensary on Christmas day. The Grass Station has been accepting competitor coupons, and will continue through the end of the year. Products by O.penVAPE are also 60 percent off. On Christmas Day, all non-cannabis merchandise will be on sale for 25 percent off.

“This year Thanksgiving was a busy day for The Grass Station,” Fox wrote in an email to MJINews. “We were open limited hours and saw more customers than a usual full day. There has also been a lot of inquiry via telephone and email asking about our availability on Christmas. This indicates to us to expect a busy day,” Fox said.

It is the end of year 0 for recreational marijuana in Colorado, so the business these dispensaries on the holidays will help determine what happens in the future.

Another dispensary open on Christmas in Denver is the world-famous 3D Cannabis Center, known for selling the first amount of legal recreational marijuana in Colorado. In fact, the first joint they sold has been donated to the Smithsonian, according to Max Eliot at Dope Directory. The three D’s stand for “Denver’s Discrete Dispensary,” and they are open from 8 am to 7 pm on Christmas day. Located at 4305 Brighton Road, just south of I-70, the 3D Cannabis Center will have specials on Christmas day, though those are to be determined, according to Wayne, who answered 3D’s phone and declined to give his last name.

We spoke to Nick, 25, and Mitch, 22, on the phone at the Ballpark Holistic Dispensary at 2119 Larimer Street, a couple blocks from Coors Field, home to the Colorado Rockies baseball team. Both asked their last names be withheld. Ballpark Holistic is open everyday, from 10 am to 6:55 pm, including Christmas.

Nick said the dispensary is open on Christmas due to responsibility, since they are not just a recreational dispensary, “We’re a medical dispensary so we want to be here for our patients.”

Mitch, who will be working at the dispensary on Christmas said he feels pretty good about working on the holiday. “I’ve been pretty secular all my life, so the holidays have never been too big a deal to me. I’m pretty happy helping the stoners who want to celebrate,” Mitch said.

While Mitch from Ballpark Holistic might be happy about working at Ballpark Holistic Dispensary on Christmas Day, not everyone at all dispensaries shared his enthusiasm. One worker at a different dispensary who declined to be quoted for this article expressed anxiety about working on Christmas, and the worker said a request to get Christmas off was entered a long time ago.

Apart from dispensaries open on Christmas in Denver, there are some holiday events in the Mile High City. Casselman’s is having a reggae jam at 7 pm on December 25.

If a reggae jam in the Mile High City sounds like the kind of thing at which open marijuana smoking is allowed, there’s another think coming.

The man at Casselman’s who answered the phone, but declined to give his name, said marijuana smoking at venues with liquor licenses is not allowed. The man said if his team sees marijuana smoking on the premises, they will put a stop to it. When asked if that means the reggae show is absolutely not 420 friendly, he softened his stance a little and said that there is a smoking patio, and if people are using vape pens, the team will have to assume that concertgoers are vaping nicotine only.

This is a dramatic difference from what occurred at Casselman’s less than a year ago as reported by The Denver Post, when they hosted the “End of Prohibition Party,” which featured a news articles with photos depicting scores of revelers taking bong rips and doing dabs at the bar in the music venue in the NoDo area of Denver.

What a difference a year makes. As comedic actor Seth Rogen learned while trying to publicly screen his national security-crippling film “The Interview” in a marijuana-friendly Denver theater, now that marijuana is legal in Colorado, it’s actually harder to toke up in public places. Even a venue notorious for being 420 friendly had to rescind its invitation to Rogen and his film after the fuzz got wind, according to The Cannabist.

There are actually rules about public marijuana consumption now. Before, marijuana itself was against the rules, so it would only pop up occasionally. In terms of public consumption, legalization has colored the area gray in some places (not according to the cops though).

However there should be no problems for anyone around Denver who just wants to enjoy a little bit of marijuana with their eggnog in front of the fireplace this Christmas. There are probably even more dispensaries open on Christmas than the ones we found for this article. It never hurts to call, but be sure to stay safe and warm when using, and have a Merry-juana Christmas!
