On April 20, 2017, advocates for the legal marijuana industry plan on staging a mass smoke-in on the steps of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Set to coincide with the 4/20 holiday, the smoke-in is a response to the Trump Administration’s pledges of greater federal marijuana enforcement.

According to the Washington Post, the event is being organized by the group DCMJ, which has history of organizing marijuana protests in the DC area. In 2016, DCMJ organized a smoke-in outside of the White House in hopes of getting the Obama administration’s attention.

A critical difference between the White House protest and the one scheduled for U.S. Capitol is that this latest action will take place on federal grounds, meaning that protesters open themselves up to arrest and possibly jail time.

“You can only ask nicely for so long before you have to change your tactic,” said Adam Eidinger, DCMJ co-founder, to the Washington Post. “It’s come to this.”
