On Jan. 19, 2017, the German Bundestag, the national parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany, adopted a law to legalize medical cannabis, according to a statement from the Bundestag.

“It’s a great addition for patients who have waited for this a long time,” said Marlene Mortler, Drug Commissioner of Germany, as reported by Deutsche Welle.

According to the Bundestag, patients will be able to obtain medical cannabis at pharmacies and insurance will cover the cost of cannabis for eligible patients. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, the country’s medical regulatory authority, is responsible for creating and running a state-owned cannabis agency for cannabis cultivation and distribution.

“Those who are severely ill need to get the best possible treatment and that includes health insurance funds paying for cannabis as a medicine for those who are chronically ill if they can’t be effectively treated any other way,” said Hermann Gröhe, Health Minister of Germany, as reported by Reuters.

Following a procedural reading by the Bundesrat, Germany’s upper house of parliament, the law should go into effect in March.
