San Diego’s Largest Daily Newspaper Endorses Proposition 64

Says opposition “claims of big problems in WA & CO after those states allowed marijuana use look weak when carefully reviewed”

 

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 28, 2016 /Weed Wire/ — Today, the Proposition 64 campaign announced that the San Diego Union-Tribune has joined the long and growing list of California’s largest newspapers endorsing the measure, which will be on the statewide ballot in November.

Every large-circulation daily newspaper in Southern California has now endorsed Proposition 64.  The Union-Tribune joins the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Daily News, Orange County Register and Riverside Press Enterprise on the list of papers that have endorsed 64 after opposing Proposition 19 in 2010, reflecting the nation’s growing support for legalization.

With the headline “Yes on Prop. 64: California should legalize marijuana,” the editorial reads: “The argument that it makes sense to regulate and tax the drug rather than accept a status quo of little regulation and taxation is powerful and persuasive.”

Addressing attacks by the opposition involving alleged problems in Washington and Colorado, the editorial notes: “The recent increases in those states of the number of people in fatal accidents found to have THC in their systems may reflect a greater emphasis on drug testing instead of a spike in stoned motorists. Marijuana use has barely increased among Washington teenagers and somewhat increased among Colorado teens, reflecting a trend in the Rocky Mountain State that predated adult legalization.”

The Union-Tribune adds: “It’s telling that polls show residents’ support of legal recreational use of marijuana has grown since those states’ laws took effect.”

Other endorsers include: California League of Conservation Voters, California Council of Land Trusts, California State NAACP, California Democratic Party, Courage Campaign, Equality California, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, National Latino Officers Association, William C. Velasquez Institute and United Food and Commercial Workers Western States Council.

Current and former elected officials in support include Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Sacramento Mayor-elect Darrell Steinberg, Democratic U.S. Reps. Ted Lieu and Jared Huffman, Republican U.S. Reps Dana Rohrabacher and Tom McClintock, State Senator Mark Leno, Assembly Speaker Emeritus Toni G. Atkins, Assemblymembers Rob Bonta, David Chiu, Susan Eggman, Cristina Garcia, Reggie Jones-Sawyer, Kevin McCarty and Bill Quirk and Tom Campbell, the former Republican Congressman and Finance Director for the State of California.

Proposition 64 is a consensus measure based on recognized best practices and recommendations from hundreds of engaged citizens and organizations. It includes strong safeguards for children, workers, local governments and small businesses and strict anti-monopoly provisions and the toughest warning label and marketing-to-kids laws in the nation.
