Jim McMahon Advocates Marijuana as Opioid Alternative

By:

Jim McMahon, quarterback for the Chicago Bears when the team won Super Bowl XX, spoke in favor of marijuana as a painkiller last week at the Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo in New York City, according to a June 18, 2016, article in the New York Daily News.

McMahon, on a panel with other former NFL players, said marijuana works as a painkiller for football-related injuries, and it is far less dangerous than opioids.

“There’s so many uses to this plant,” McMahon said. “Hundreds of thousands of people are dying from [painkillers] and there’s not one case of people dying from the hemp plant.”

Essentially the same position has been advocated by current player Eugene Monroe, a free agent who was recently cut from the Baltimore Ravens. Monroe thinks his outspoken support for marijuana was the cause behind the Ravens’ decision.

Leonard Marshall, a former defensive end for the New York Giants, also advocated the use of marijuana for problems stemming from his football career.

“My quality of life has improved because of this,” Marshall said.
