Montel Williams Detained in Germany Over Medical Marijuana

On July 29, 2016, television star and medical marijuana activist Montel Williams was detained in Germany while on vacation with his family. According to TMZ, Williams was briefly detained at Frankfurt Airport after authorities in customs discovered a small bag of marijuana kief in his luggage.

After explaining to the authorities that he uses medical marijuana to treat multiple sclerosis and providing the proper paperwork from his physician in the United States, German authorities were able to release Williams without an arrest or citation.

Although possession of marijuana is still illegal in Germany, the country is expected to legalize medical marijuana by spring 2017.

In a statement on Facebook, Williams’ political director and spokesman Jonathan Franks thanked German officials for their professionalism and reiterated Williams’ commitment to the cause of medical marijuana.

“Unfortunately this is the reality faced by medical marijuana patients every day all over the world,” Franks said. “Today, Montel reaffirms his commitment to fighting for sensible medical marijuana policies across the world and to fighting the stigma he and so many other seriously ill Americans face every day for simply following the advice of their doctor.”
