NFL Doctors Speak With Medical Marijuana Researchers

In an effort to combat the growing problem of opioid addiction among its players, the NFL has signaled that it is open to the idea of players using medical marijuana.

According to Sports Illustrated, two of the top medical professionals in the NFL conducted a conference call with medical marijuana researchers from John Hopkins and the University of Pennsylvania on June 2, 2016.

Jeff Miller, NFL senior vice president for player health and safety, and Russell Lonser, a member of the NFL’s head, neck and spine committee, requested the call with researchers, who are, in part, funded by Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Eugene Monroe.

Marcel Bonn-Miller, a University of Pennsylvania medical professor who was on the call, told The Washington Post that Miller and Lonser had a genuine interest.

“They are definitely showing genuine curiosity, and they are definitely not throwing up roadblocks,” Bonn-Miller said.
