LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 11, 2016 /Weed Wire/ — Kentucky-based Start-up Hemp Foods America announced today that it has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to purchase viable seed, soil amendments, and other necessary implements needed to bring hemp into organic rotation in Kentucky. The company is out to raise $50,000 on Indiegogo which will allow Hemp Foods America to utilize its acreage and approved permits for the 2016 grow season.
Hemp Foods America was founded in 2014 by California native Chad Rosen. After learning how resilient hemp is, Rosen decided that commercializing the crop could help fight many problems plaguing rural, agrarian communities across the US. The opportunity to build a business around hemp and establish the first hemp foods manufacturing facility on American soil has motivated Rosen to ensure the success of the business.
“The benefits of a strong hemp industry in the United States are huge,” Rosen said. “Not only is hemp one of the healthiest foods in the world, but the reintroduction of this commodity gives America’s family farmers a sustainable alternative to GMO crops, creates economic opportunities for rural communities, and helps to combat climate change.”
Despite industrial hemp’s lack of psychoactive properties and many state government’s allowing it to be grown, the Federal government still considers it a Schedule 1 narcotic.
“The success of companies like Hemp Foods America is important because it shows policy makers what job creation looks like and what being an American entrepreneurs is about,” said Rosen. “The US is the only industrial nation without a thriving hemp industry. Why should China, Canada, and dozens of other countries benefit from US demand while we’re left shipping jobs overseas?”
Hemp Foods America currently offers organic dehulled hemp seeds, organic hemp protein powder, organic hemp flour, and organic hemp oil.
In exchange for pledging to the project, backers will be receive a variety of perks including hemp food products, limited edition hemp clothing, signed works from activist/farmer Wendell Berry, a trip to Kentucky, and more.
