Following market close on Dec. 4, 2017, Aphria Inc. (TSX:APH), an Ontario-based licensed producer of medical cannabis, made headlines when it announced that it had entered into an agreement to be the medical cannabis supplier for Shoppers Drug Mart, a Canadian pharmacy chain.

Shoppers Drug Mart spokesperson Tammy Smitham told CityNews that “effective immediately prescriptions for medical marijuana will be covered up to an annual maximum of $1,500.” Loblaw employees would also be covered. Loblaw owns Shoppers.
On Dec. 5, 2016, the Toronto Board of Health passed a motion to recommend that Canada’s federal government approve pharmacies to dispense medical marijuana.
On May 5, 2016, Galen Weston, president of Loblaw (OTC:LBLCF), Canada’s largest drugstore and grocery chain, announced at the company’s annual general meeting that Loblaw believes pharmacies should be able to dispense medical marijuana.
