The NFL’s chief medical officer says it is “really important” for the league and the NFL Players Association to determine whether marijuana can be used as an effective and safe pain-management tool for players.

The NFL has written to the NFL Players Association offering to work in tandem to study the potential use of marijuana as a pain management tool for players, according to people familiar with the situation.
Phil Jackson, president of the New York Knicks, talked about marijuana use and the NBA during a visit to the CBS Sports Network program “We Need to Talk.” Jackson started by talking about his own marijuana use following the back surgery that kept him out of the 1969-1970 season when he was on the New York Knicks team.
Tennessee Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan is the only active NFL player calling on the league to investigate the merits of cannabidiol, or CBD oil, according to a report at CBSNews.com. Morgan has not used CBD oil, a non-psychoactive chemical from marijuana, because he does not want to risk violating NFL rules on substance abuse.
The NFL is expected soon to give Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson a 10-game suspension for his second use of marijuana, a substance banned under the league’s agreement with the NFL Players Association. But Henderson might appeal the second suspension, which could force the NFL and the Players Association to reconsider their marijuana policy.
Doctors For Cannabis Regulation has written an open letter to the National Football League encouraging the sports organization to rethink its ban on marijuana. The letter reads in part, “cannabis deserves the serious attention of your medical staff as a viable pain management alternative and potential neuroprotectant.”
A National Football League team is demanding that another group change its logo, claiming that the Pittsburgh chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (better known as NORML) logo, which basically looks just like the Steelers logo with the throwing-star things swapped out for marijuana leaves.
