CALGARY, AB, Dec. 18, 2017 /Weed Wire/ — Many Albertans are satisfied with the marijuana-related policies recently introduced by the provincial government, a new Insights West poll has found.
In the online survey of a representative provincial sample, 88% of Albertans agree with the government’s decision to restrict marijuana smoking to areas where tobacco smoking is currently allowed (i.e. not in vehicles, school property or parks).
In addition, 78% of Albertans agree with allowing marijuana stores to operate under a specific license (i.e. not selling marijuana through liquor stores or drug stores), and 77% are in favour of establishing 18 years as the legal age to acquire marijuana in the province.
Two thirds of Albertans (67%) agree with the decision to forbid marijuana stores from selling tobacco, alcohol or pharmaceutical products, and more than three-in-five (63%) are in favour of allowing residents to keep up to four marijuana plants in their household.
“The provincial government appears to have struck the right tone in dealing with the impending legalization of marijuana,” says Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs, at Insights West. “Supporters of the three main parties that contested the 2015 election are satisfied with the proposed framework.”
Three-in-five Albertans (60%) support the legalization of marijuana in Canada (+5 since a nationwide Insights West poll concluded in October 2016), while more than a third (36%) are opposed to it. Support is lower than what was observed in October 2017 in British Columbia (70%).
While there is no gender gap on this issue in Alberta, residents aged 18-to-34 are decidedly more likely to support legalizing cannabis (85%) than their older counterparts (54% for those aged 35-to-54, and 45% for those aged 55 and over).
Nine-in-ten Albertans (90%) say they are “very familiar” or “somewhat familiar” with discussions related to marijuana legalization.
A sizeable majority of Albertans is against legalizing other drugs, including ecstasy (86%), powder cocaine (also 86%), heroin (88%), fentanyl (also 88%), crack cocaine (89%) and methamphetamine or “crystal meth” (also 89%).
