A doctor in Tallahassee, Fla., will open the city’s first medical marijuana practice, according to a Nov. 22, 2016, article in the Tallahassee Democrat.

Dr. Joseph Dorn announced his new practice following the Nov. 8, 2016, election in which Floridians approved Amendment 2, allowing medical marijuana in the state.

Medical Marijuana Treatment of Florida, located on Capital Medical Boulevard in Tallahassee, Fla., could open as soon as the week after Thanksgiving Day 2016.

“It will happen as soon as we move the furniture over there,” Dorn said. “We are waiting for the person who owns the building to OK the lease.”

On Nov. 7, 2016, Dorn resigned his position as medical director for Surterra Therapeutics, a licensed grower and dispenser of medical marijuana. According to state law, the medical director of a dispensary cannot also obtain medical marijuana for patients.

“I saw a need where few physicians were interested in being qualified doctors to order this,” Dorn said. “I couldn’t perform that function while being medical director. I decided to go back to direct patient care, that’s my strong point.”

Dorn primarily has worked for Florida hospices during the past 12 years.
