Famous Women Love Cannabis And Don’t Care Who Knows It

Academy Award-winning ping-pong impresario and political activist Susan Sarandon responded to a shout out in A$AP Rocky and Action Bronson’s new single “1Train” this week by reaching out to the two rappers, via Twitter, with an invitation to “blaze one” sometime in the future.

Sarandon has never backed away from expressing her love of marijuana, and has recently also expressed an appreciation for Burning Man and psychedelics.

This exchange between the 68-year-old Sarandon and two rappers has got some calling her “the coolest grandma ever,” which is on some level lame and reductive, but, okay, also probably true.

She’s not the only big female Hollywood star willing to openly express her love of marijuana, though. Coolest grandma runner-up Jane Fonda told Dujour that she smokes marijuana from time to time, and in January Stevie Nicks told Rolling Stone that she uses marijuana to stoke the creative furnace when writing new music.

Okay, women like Stevie Nicks, Susan Sarandon, and Jane Fonda being down with the sweet leaf isn’t exactly shocking news. But how about this: considerably less hip American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, interviewed in Us Weekly in February, took a moment to tell readers, “I cannot understand the fact that controlled narcotic substances and alcohol are legal and weed isn’t. How many people do you know who have died from weed? My point exactly.”

Clarkson doubled down in a May interview with Rolling Stone, telling the magazine, “I’m not even a pothead, I just think it’s funny that we legalize something as destructive as alcohol or pills and not that. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some alcohol, but I don’t know anybody in rehab because of pot. And I know a ton of people that have died either from liver cancer or behind the wheel. We legalize things that are so disturbing for our bodies, but one that’s completely fine, we say, ‘No, that’s bad for you.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, enjoy your scotch. Enjoy your Xanax.'”

Add to this list Melissa Etheridge, who has even tossed her hat into the medicinal marijuana game through a partnership with a California based dispensary.

Here’s a prediction: the days when a Hollywood star like Sarandon publicly expressing appreciation for cannabis is news-fodder are rapidly come to a close. As legalization sweeps across the nation and attitudes continue to change, it won’t be long before a public figures’ views on cannabis are only newsworthy when they’re advocating against it.
