On Oct. 25, 2016, Colorado State University-Pueblo announced that Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, the “Father of Cannabis Research,” will deliver the inaugural Mechoulam Lecture at the 2017 Institute of Cannabis Research Conference at CSU-Pueblo next April.

Having discovered the endocannabinoid system and being the first to identify the chemical structure of THC and CBD, Mechoulam is considered by many as one of the most important pioneers in the field of medical cannabis research.

“It is truly an honor to have such a seminal figure speak at our Institute’s inaugural conference,” said Rick Kreminski, CSU-Pueblo Provost.

“I could not be prouder of how our hard work and willingness to move forward with the Institute already is paying dividends by attracting the attention of such a renowned researcher in Dr. Mechoulam,” said Lesley Di Mare, CSU-Pueblo President. “His appearance in association with our inaugural conference will bring global visibility and provide the impetus for the Institute’s future success.”

CSU-Pueblo was able to create the Institute of Cannabis Research as a result of the Pueblo County Board of Commissioners voting on June 13, 2016, to distribute $270,000 in marijuana tax revenue to the university for marijuana research. According to CSU-Pueblo, the Institute of Cannabis Research Conference, on April 28-30, 2017, will be the first academically-based conference on cannabis.
