Fierce Competition in Oregon Forcing Some Dispensaries to Close

In Oregon, the legal marijuana industry is booming, but not for everyone. As the marijuana market develops and reaches market saturation, more and more entrepreneurs have begun to struggle to keep up with the competition, particularly those in the medical marijuana business.

What was once an open field has become quite crowded. According to The Guardian, Portland has approximately 12,000 medical marijuana patients and about 136 dispensaries serving them all, or approximately 80 patients per dispensary.

Although the prospect of seeing dozens of businesses shutter would give some business owners cause for concern, dispensary owner Donald Morse isn’t worried.

“We didn’t need all those dispensaries. A lot of people got into it, but they were not well financed and were hanging on by their fingertips,” Morse explained. “The shake-out has begun. Those with sound business practices will survive, those without are going to fail.”
