On Aug. 8, 2016, Gallup released the results for its latest poll on marijuana use in America, finding that one in eight American adults currently smoke marijuana, which is almost double the percentage calculated in 2013.

In addition to current usage rates, Gallup found that 43 percent of Americans have ever tried marijuana. Gallup’s survey was conducted via telephone and the questions were applied to half samples of approximately 500 adults each.

While income and education levels did not appear to influence an individual’s likelihood of trying marijuana, Gallup discovered that age and religiosity influence one’s likelihood of use—19 percent of adults under the age of 30 reported current marijuana use and 14 percent of adults who rarely or never attend church reported current use; meanwhile, only 2 percent of those who attend church on a weekly basis reported current use.
