Agreement Builds on University of the Sciences Excellence in Research and Education; Leverages Franklin BioScience’s Expertise and Knowledge of the Cannabis Plant and Deep History of Bringing Innovative Science-Backed Medical Cannabis Products to Patients
PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 19, 2017 /Weed Wire/ — University of the Sciences (USciences) and Franklin BioScience announce a collaboration to help strengthen and enrich education, research, training and employment opportunities in the maturing multibillion-dollar cannabis sector in the US.
“This partnership will enrich the healthcare community’s understanding of cannabis by bringing together USciences’ strength in healthcare research and education with Franklin BioScience’s expertise and knowledge of developing innovative and trusted, scientifically supported medical cannabis products,” said Dr. Andrew Peterson, John Wyeth Dean of Mayes College of Healthcare Business and Policy at USciences.
“We are honored to work with such a respected healthcare visionary like the USciences to help empower healthcare professionals with the knowledge they need to provide cutting-edge services,” said Jeremy Kahn, CEO of Franklin BioScience. “Excellence in research, science, and innovation is core to our mission. We believe that the healthcare community should and must play a vital role in the cannabis industry’s growth and legitimization. We look forward to helping broaden healthcare providers’ and our partners’ understanding of the cannabis plant and better educating healthcare professionals on how safe, third-party tested and high-quality medical cannabis products can be used as a reliable medical alternative to treat a variety of patient conditions, and look forward to working with more healthcare leaders and pioneers now and in the future.”
The USciences-Franklin BioScience collaboration will include the development of educational programming focused on preparing students to understand the cannabis plant and its medicinal value. It will also provide a valuable research partnership. The organizations will actively work to develop a host of co-branded and mutually accessible curriculum and materials — created with oversight by the USciences experts and faculty with input harvested from Franklin BioScience’s firsthand expertise researching, working, and innovating with the cannabis plant — to help best educate physicians, healthcare professionals, and other interested parties.
This association also builds on the work of The Substance Use Disorders Institute at USciences (SUDI), which is an approved educational provider for the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Office of Medical Marijuana. SUDI offers the state mandated medical cannabis certification courses for healthcare providers and those interested in working with medical cannabis in Pennsylvania, one of the country’s next medical cannabis states set to come online in January 2018.
Franklin BioScience will expand its cultivation, manufacturing and dispensary operations, which span across Colorado and Nevada (two states where both medical and adult-use cannabis are legal). In the New Year, Franklin BioScience will also begin to serve patients at multiple dispensaries in Southeastern PA.
In 2017, the North American cannabis marketplace will grow 33 percent to nearly $10 billion. And with California and Canada coming online soon, adult-use markets will push the 2021 market to over $24 billion, according to Arcview Market Research. The latest Gallup poll also shows growing support for cannabis legalization with 64 percent of Americans now in favor of the measure. To date, the industry has also created over one-hundred thousand well-paying jobs across the country.
