MJINews and today announced the Marijuana Investor Summit, which will take place in Denver, following the Cannabis Cup, April 20-22, 2015. The goal of this summit is to join entrepreneurs and investors in an educational event that helps create understanding about how to navigate not just the marijuana industry but investments as well.

“We are seeking to create an educational event that mixes the basics of investing with the challenges of cannabis” noted David Friedman, CEO and Publisher of MJINews. “Too many shows focus on the marijuana industry exclusively and the basics of investing are left out. Many of these investors and entrepreneurs are very inexperienced and someone needs to teach them about valuations, due diligence and deal structures before they try to invest or raise money,” Friedman added.

“Most of the deals in this industry are very small. It’s difficult to build a business large enough right now to attract institutional capital and that capital is not really ready to come in anyway,” said Randy Shipley, founder and CEO of, the first crowdfunding platform strictly devoted to marijuana. Smaller funding vehicles like crowdfunding are expected to comprise a large part of the initial funding of marijuana companies in the early years. They lend themselves to smaller investments by their nature.

The summit will feature a number of prominent speakers from within the marijuana industry but also many from outside. Hedge fund, private equity fund and venture capital fund managers will be speaking and conducting both general sessions and a half-day boot camp. According to Friedman, there are still some openings for speakers, but many have been filled.

Early bird packages are available: $495 for general admission, $595 for investors and $995 for entrepreneurs. Entrepreneur and investor packages each include two passes to the boot camp, with the entrepreneur package including an extra show pass and a booth in the exhibit hall. Additional sponsorship and exhibiting spaces are available for companies to showcase their products and knowledge.
