The Massachusetts Medical Society has launched a comprehensive cannabis curriculum for physicians recommending medical cannabis for patients.
Developed by TheAnswerPage.com, a website that offers educational content regarding medical cannabis, physicians will learn about topics such as the endocannabinoid system, proper dosage for medical cannabis, the health affects of medical cannabis and how to assess the use of medical cannabis for specific diseases.
Although the Massachusetts Medical Society continues to oppose the legalization of both medical and recreational marijuana, group president Henry Dorkin told MassLive that it has to accept the fact that patients will use medical cannabis and that it’s the medical society’s responsibility to see that medical cannabis is used as safely as possible.
“We’re not in any way urging [physicians] to write for this,” Dorkin said. “But it’s a fact of life that marijuana exists, it’s legalized in the commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the reality is physicians need to be educated about marijuana, and they need to learn to deal with its effects on patients.”
