Earlier this month several sources reported that Barbadian pop star Rihanna, who already sidelines as an actress, creative director of Puma, and owner of a beauty agency, supposedly revealed during an appearance at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Negril, Jamaica, that she is preparing to jump into the marijuana business. The line would be branded under the name “MaRihanna”—which Forbes refers to as clever and … sure, okay—and would include edibles as well as new strains like “Karibbean Kush, Haitian Haze and Jamaican High Grade.”
The story seems to have originated with 18karatreggae.com, which quoted the singer of hits like “Umbrella” and “Disturbia” as saying “MaRihanna by Rihanna is truly the first mainstream cannabis brand in the world and proud to be a pioneer … . MaRihanna is blazing a trail for the industry.” The line, again according to 18karatreggae.com, “will be available in Alaska, Oregon, Washington and Colorado pretty soon.”
Sounds like a great and very profitable idea, but hold on—last week, Rihanna’s publicists responded to the story by claiming it is completely untrue. Which really makes you wonder, where did that fairly detailed quote come from? Was it invented? Is MaRihanna the creation of some prankster with a very odd sense of humor? Maybe she is actually planning the line but wasn’t supposed to mention it yet? Maybe Rihanna just wanted the people at the Cannabis Cup to think she was cool?
Rihanna, if you are reading this, you are cool. You are so cool! And talented! You don’t have to impress anyone, you just be you, and keep rolling blunts on top of your bodyguard’s head.
Whatever the truth, Rihanna is so inextricably linked to marijuana in the public imagination that she really should get into the business. She has been frequently photographed smoking up, and has used her Instagram feed to promote her passion for the legalization business.
If she is going to do it—and she should—she is going to have to move fast if she wants to come off more trailblazer than copycat. On Nov. 9, Snoop Dogg announced Leafs by Snoop, a custom cannabis brand already available at LivWell dispensaries in Colorado. The Weeknd is selling The Madness Fall Tour Limited Edition PAX vaporizers for $325 right now, Wiz Khalifa has already released his own strain, and country legend Willie Nelson is readying Willie’s Reserve, a premium cannabis lifestyle brand.
