More Arizonans are using medical marijuana than ever before. This is according to a year-end report on the state’s medical marijuana program, which was released on Jan. 24, 2017, by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

The amount of medical marijuana sold in 2016 increased by 53%, from approximately 19 tons in 2015 to slightly more than 29 tons in 2016.

The surge in patient enrollment over the last year likely drove sales growth in 2016. Patient enrollment increased by approximately 29%, from 87,733 patients in December of 2015 to 114,439 patients in December 2016.

At 63.6%, men made up the majority of medical marijuana patients, while women made up 36.4% of patients.

Although the majority of medical marijuana patients were over the age of 31, the single largest demographic of medical marijuana patients were those aged 18-31 years, comprising 26.38% of all patients enrolled.
